I have a hypothesis that people seek government approval as projection of the childhood need for parent approval.

Authority exists to the extent that we are not willing to define our own interests. In a sense... humanity is still a child in that way.

There is no such thing as "legal right". Only some people using the force of violence to gain advantages over other people. Getting a document from the government does not legitimize violence to anyone else.

I am very well aware of the "benifits" of marriage. These are "benifits" from oppression that the government never had a right take away in the first place. I

Personally, I couldn't really care any less about if the government "legitimizes" my love or desire to spend my life with another person. It's between that person and me, noONE else and noTHING else comes into

By the government not acknowledging your marraige you're disadvantaged because you lose the legal rights associated with marriage. Married couples get different tax brackets and are protected by different laws when it comes to assets, ownership, and other various items.
